I came across a really great art project by Jane Mount today. It’s called Ideal Bookshelfand you can commission her to paint the spines of your favourite books, the books that changed your life and made you who you are today (a little bit) – or you can get art prints of other people’s ideal bookshelf. I love both books and art, so that’s pretty cool right? I’m definitely going to have one custom made if I ever have the money.
Which books would be ‘portrayed’ on your bookshelf? I think mine would definitely contain classics like Pride & Prejudice or Atonement, but maybe also some books I just loved reading like 44 Scotland Street.
Are you all glad it’s the weekend? It’s supposed to be the hottest weekend of the year over here, so I’ve definitely planned a trip to the pool to cool off. I’m also attending a wedding tomorrow (and I still have nothing to wear, aah!). Here are some essential ingredients for a hot summer weekend:
Read: Nemesis by Phillip Roth. It’s not really an easy beach read (it deals with a terrifying polio epidemic in a small town somewhere in New Jersey), but the atmosphere Roth is able to create is exceptional. The sweltering summer heat that brought the epidemic, the fear about who the next victim could be, the desperate search for information about this disease… I’ve finished this book in one night because I couldn’t put it down, it’s so good.
Listen To: Passions Pit’s new album, Gossamer. Everybodies talking about them at the moment and it’s easy to understand why. And while you’re at it, the first album, Manners, it’s pretty perfect as well.
Do: All those summer activities you wanted to do before autumn kicks in. Go to the beach, have a barbecue, make your own bracelets, or just spend all day in your hammock reading a good book (or sleeping).
Watch: To Catch a Thief. I mean, the 50s, the Côte d’Azur, Cary Grant and Grace Kelly? Add a little mystery and you have the perfect summer movie.
It’s time for some new music! You can listen to this mix while you’re drinking the first cup of coffee of the day, read the paper, enjoy the last minutes in bed…or anytime actually. It’s quiet, so nobody is screaming at you while you’re still half asleep, but also upbeat to make you excited for the new day. Have fun listening, over here.
